Hi, I’m Russ. I’m originally from Wolverhampton, having lived and worked in Dudley, West Midlands since 1992.

I create mostly abstracts exploring themes of curiosity, our inner world (emotions, faith, uncertainty) and the defining experiences that shape who we are.

I work intuitively, not working to a particular plan, and most often I have no idea where the finished painting will end up. There is a point during the work where I start to get a feel about what the painting is about, and also where I start to then bring in design elements to enhance the composition.

Primarily I work with acrylics, but also use oil pastels, oil sticks, collage, found objects and other mixed media. My bold, multi-layered, colourful works attempt to capture the tension between order and intuition, and the balance of precision and imperfection.

Being a member of UASB has been such a lifeline for me, and from September this year I’m dropping my office days three days a week to concentrate more on building up my art practice and can’t wait to get started. I’ll also be taking part in Birmingham Open Studios, being sited at Seventh Circle Gallery in Digbeth.

I’m also a musician. My first instrument is bass and I play both electric and double bass, but also love exploring other instruments (at the moment it’s all about the Egyptian Oud!). I love jazz, improvisation and taking risks with musical expression.
