SHARON BAKER
Hello, my name is Sharon and I’m a printmaker based in Stirchley.
I work mainly with photoetching, monoprint and, more recently, photogravure. I aim to create atmospheric prints evoking emotions and moods.
I am inspired by domestic, every-day, scenes and draw on nostalgia, memories and feelings to create my prints. My work is eclectic, I tend to work in series which have contrasting styles depending on my subject matter and processes.
One strand is routed in Nineteenth Century photographic Pictorialism in the creation of grainy, monochrome, photo-based prints where my imagery relies on a controlled tonality to create their unique atmosphere.
Another strand is more abstract and explores patterns and gestures repeated in different figurations to suggest solidity, fragility, flux and motion.
Curtains, windows, mirrors and reflections are some of my reoccurring visual motifs.
My favourite place to be is at home in my small studio, printing using my beloved Bewick and Wilson etching press. There are so many more prints I want to make, so many more ideas to realise.
