Janice Rider
Hello I’m Janice Rider.
I am a figurative artist, exploring identity, diversity and familial human connection, through drawings, paintings, mixed-media and installation. Portraiture is the core of my practice with an ongoing passion for observing and delving into character.
I am privileged to be living between two cultures, through marriage to an Egyptian filmmaker, which allows me an inside view of the differences, similarities and misconceptions within both societies. I have two degrees in both Drama and Fine Art and in my 20s found myself unable to decide between acting or painting. Unconsciously I combined the two by becoming a costume designer for the film and TV industry but at the same time running my art practice alongside it. My long costume design career which clocks up 50 years next year, has enhanced my exploration of character beyond surface expression. But now that career has nearly run its course and my art practice is taking over with much greater determination and commitment.
Birmingham born, I was brought up on a rich diet of theatre and art, thanks to an inspired pair of parents. I still draw inspiration from Brum’s rich collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings; their depictions of the Orient and Victorian morality relate keenly to the kitsch designs of contemporary Egypt, juxtaposed with the ancient customs of Islam; they have always fascinated me since childhood.
I am also influenced by the figurative works of Paula Rego, Lucien Freud and David Hockney, while often returning to the restraint of Gwen John’s and Celia Paul’s paintings.
I have an almost primal need to depict portraits, often using blind drawings as a starting point. They become my friends and I want people to meet them. I draw strength from viewing them and can’t live without looking at them.
Recently my work has been selected for ING Discerning Eye at the Mall Galleries, London; EmpowerHer, the inaugural exhibition at CasildArt Contemporary, London; The Drawing Prize 2025 at Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and last year’s Birmingham Open.
I love being an active member of UASB and I currently share the responsibility with artist Shaun Morris, of curating TBAG (The Back Room Gallery) at Kitchen Garden Cafe which shows UASB members’ work in Open Calls and Solo Shows.
I undertake professional portrait commissions (both human and pets) and am experienced in delivering art workshops in schools, museums and community settings.
